Bee Bread – The Next Great Apitherapeutic Superfood

Bee Bread is one of my favorite “superfoods” currently and its also one of the lesser known of the “functional foods”.

Bee Bread is known as Ambrosia (food of the Gods) or Perga.  It is a natural substance created by the bees as a potent food source for feeding their young.  It is an alchemical mixture of about 25% honey and 75% pollen gathered by bees.

This mixture is stored along with with the enzymes found in bee saliva, which infuses the pollen with a broad range of natural probiotic bacteria and yeasts, and begins the process of fermentation and predigestion – making the end product highly bio-available for both bees and humans!

“Bee bread provides bees with proteins, lipids, microelements and vitamins. It also contains tocopherol, niacin, thiamine, biotin, folic acid, polyphenols, carotenoid pigments, phytosterols, enzymes and coenzymes.”

A number of recent studies have examined the nutritional composition of bee bread and have found that bee bread is a great source of many nutrients and may possess potential health benefits.

“Bee bread and pollen, due to their nutritional and medicinal properties, are used for apitherapeutic purposes.

These include about 200 different substances, such as free amino acids and vitamins. Special attention should be attributed to unsaturated fatty acids such as linoleic, linolenic, and arachidonic, which are found in pollen and bee bread.”

“Bee bread has a long history used mainly in folk medicine. Nowadays, bee bread is growing in commercial interest due to its high nutritional properties.”

“Bee bread revealed to be a source of nutrients and bioactive compounds. Presented high levels of carbohydrates, proteins, and minerals.

“Kaempferol-3-O-di-rhamnoside was the most abundant phenolic compound. Revealed antioxidant activity and inhibited all the tested bacterial and fungi strains.”

“Bee bread has potential activities as antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, neuroprotective and hepatoprotective.” [5]

The basic chemical components of bee bread include carbohydrates, proteins and vitamins, as well as minerals, fatty acids and other substances such as enzymes, natural antibiotics, antioxidants and hormones.

Bee bread is considered to be a beneficial food supplement. In recent years, there has been significant interest in the use of bee bread to treat many illnesses.
