Eurycoma Longifolia Jack also commonly known as Tongkat Ali, “Longjack” and “Malaysian Ginseng” is a popular medicinal herb traditionally recommended for it’s aphrodisiac properties and reported ability to boost virility.

Eurycoma Longifolia is a flowering plant of the family Simaroubaceae, native to Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand and also Cambodia.

Tongkat Ali is one of the medicinal herbs with the strongest scientific evidence to support its potential benefits for supporting and enhancing male sexual health.

Over the past few decades, numerous in vivo animal studies and human clinical trials have been conducted across the globe to explore the promising role of EL in managing various male sexual disorders, which include erectile dysfunction, male infertility, low libido, and downregulated testosterone levels. [1]

Furthermore, Tongkat Ali has been shown to possess anti-inflammatory, antimalarial, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties.

Its common phytochemical components include alkaloids, flavonoids, phenolics, saponins, tannins, and triterpenes.

This plant is rich in various quassinoids including eurycolactone, eurycomalactone, eurycomanol, eurycomanone, and eurycomaoside all of which has been reported to contribute to its remedial properties including increased muscle strength, endurance in cycling time, and reduced anxiety and stress. [2]

Let’s take a look at some of the latest scientific research on the potential health benefits of Tongkat Ali.

Tongkat Ali As A Potential Adaptogen Of Male Sexual Health

Tongkat Ali has a long traditional history of being recommended for it’s potent aphrodisiac and pro-fertility properties.

A systematic review published 2017 in the Chinese journal of natural medicines analyzed and summarized the literature on human clinical trials which revealed the clinical significance and therapeutic feasibility of Eurycoma longifolia in improving male sexual health.

Out of 150 articles, 11 met the inclusion criteria. The majority of articles included were randomized placebo-controlled trials, multiple cohort studies, or pilot trials.

All these studies demonstrated considerable effects of EL on male sexual health disorders.

Among them, 7 studies revealed remarkable association between the use of EL and the efficacy in the treatment of male sexual disorders, and remaining 4 studies failed to demonstrate sufficient effects on male sexual health.

In summary, there is convincing evidence for the prominence of EL in improving the male sexual health. [1]

Tongkat Ali As A Testosterone Booster

Multiple studies have now found that Tongkat Ali can help to restore serum levels of Testosterone, thus significantly improving sexual health in males.

One study published in 2012 took 76 patients suffering from late-onset hypogonadism (LOH) and prescribed them 200 mg of a standardised water-soluble extract of Tongkat ali for 1 month.

The Ageing Males’ Symptoms (AMS) according to the standardised rating scale and the serum testosterone concentration were taken.

Results show that treatment of LOH patients with this Tongkat ali extract significantly (P < 0.0001) improved the AMS score as well as the serum testosterone concentration.

While before treatment only 10.5% of the patients did not show any complaint according to the AMS scale and 35.5% had normal testosterone levels, after the completed treatment 71.7% and 90.8% of the patients showed normal values, respectively.

Thus, Tongkat ali extract appears to be useful as a supplement in overcoming the symptoms of LOH and for the management of hypogonadism. [3]

Tongkat Ali As A Pro-Erectile Aid

A few small studies have now found that Tongkat Ali may have the potential to improve erectile function.

A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials published in 2015 concluded:

Based on current evidence, the herbal extract of Tongkat Ali may have clinical effect on erectile function.

However, more efficacy trials are warranted to further support current evidence. [5]
