Recent studies have shown that the popular superfood Goji Berries may have the potential to treat metabolic syndrome and diabetes mellitus.

The studies found that Goji Berries helps to reduce abdominal fat, improve lipid profile and antioxidant status in patients with metabolic syndrome and may even be an effective treatment for diabetes mellitus.

We have been socially conditioned by proponents of allopathic medicine to believe that there is no such thing as evidence-based alternative medicine or natural methods that we can use to improve our health, such as utilizing dietary and lifestyle modifications, but we now know this is far from the truth.

For individuals suffering from metabolic disorders such as insulin resistance and the likes of Type 2 Diabetes, healthy dietary changes can have significant benefits for improving metabolic health, glycemic control and preventing cardiovascular disease.

Goji Berry also known as Lycium Barbarum and Wolf Berry is a prized berry that has been used in traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) for more than 2000 years.

Traditional herbalists often recommend Goji Berry for strengthening the body, prolonging life, boosting the immune system, increasing libido and promoting vitality.

Goji berries are one of the richest plant-based dietary sources of Vitamin C and the carotenoid Zeaxanthin.

Many of the health benefits of Goji Berries are attributed to the bioactive component polysaccharide – protein complex 4 (LBP4), which is composed of six monosaccharides (galactose, glucose, rhmnose, arabinose, mannoseandxylose).

Research has found that Lycium barbarum polysaccharide (LBP) to possess antioxidant, immunomodulating and anti-tumor activity.  LBP-4 has also been the target of several studies for its anti-hypoglycemic role.

Goji Berry For The Treatment Of Diabetes Mellitus & Metabolic Syndrome

A systematic review published December 2017 performed a systematic review on the use of Goji Berry (Lycium barbarum) for the DM(Diabetes Mellitus) treatment.

Research demonstrated that the Goji berry (Lycium barbarum) has the potential to be effective in the treatment DM, in addition to its protective effect on renal disease patients and their high antioxidant effect. 

Goji Berry would be an excellent alternative to already currently available drugs and contain no adverse effects. So, it is extremely important that more research on the subject to support its importance. [2]

Another study published June 2017 examined the effect of adding 14 grams of Goji Berries daily to the diet of patients with Metabolic Syndrome.

The study found that Goji Berry helped to reduce abdominal(belly) fat, improve lipid profile and antioxidant status(glutathione) in patients with metabolic syndrome.

The study concluded:

The results of this study demonstrated an increase in serum antioxidant capacity and GSH and a decrease in lipid peroxidation, LDL cholesterol, and waist circumference after long-term ingestion of Goji Berry, suggesting that this is an effective dietary supplement for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases in individuals with MS following a free diet.
